White Fillings in in Everton Hills, Brisbane

A dental filling (often referred to as a ‘dental restoration’) is a restorative material used to artificially restore the function and integrity of missing tooth structure. The loss of tooth structure is most often caused by decay, which if not repaired will continue to destroy the tooth.

At Everton Hills Dental Clinic we utilise a number of dental materials to restore your teeth to health and vitality. These materials include;

White Fillings (Composite Resin Fillings)
The main advantage of White Fillings is the aesthetically pleasing result they create for patients. Virtually indistinguishable in appearance from your natural teeth; White Fillings may be used wherever possible, especially for fillings in the ‘aesthetic zone’. The ‘aesthetic zone’ is comprised of the teeth that are visible during the patient’s smile.

White Fillings can only be successful in a healthy mouth. Patients suffering from medical conditions, such as Reflux, or poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth, will need to be treated for their condition first before composite resin material can be used properly. While these conditions are being treated, an intermediate ‘white’ material that contains fluoride (glass ionomer cement) can be used.

The main disadvantages to White Fillings include: possibility of post-operative sensitivity, more expensive initial cost, more frequent necessity for replacement and a higher risk for recurrent caries (decay) especially in patients with poor oral hygiene.

Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam is a strong material which has been utilised in dental treatment for many years. It has a proven track record and is also less expensive for patients compared to having a Crown or Porcelain Onlay / Inlay completed. For posterior teeth (back teeth), each situation is assessed. Your back teeth require a strong material to withstand the chewing forces and often caries (decay) develops between teeth and progresses below the gumline. In such cases, Amalgam is a better choice as it is less susceptible to moisture and has been researched for a long time. Amalgam may also be recommended for patients who have oral hygiene problems.

The main disadvantages to Amalgam fillings are their silver appearance and the more complex preparation of the tooth required before treatment.

During your consultation at Everton Hills Dental Clinic, Dr Marles will speak with you about the Restorative materials and which type is best for your individual needs.
